These are the key points from my Jumua Khutbah (Friday service). When I go digital someday I may include the audio of further speeches too :)

Islam and the question of violence

Part I

  1. Initial Supplication

I seek refuge with Allah from the Accursed Shaytan

In the Name of Allah Most Gracious Most Merciful

All Praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds

And peace be upon the greatest among the prophets and messengers

Our master and leader Muhammad…..

And upon his righteous and pure progeny.

As-Salaam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuho!

The Peace, Mercy of God and the Blessings of God be on you!

  1. Starting with a verse from the Holy Qur’an (the Final Testament)

Bismillah Hir Rahman Nir Raheem

In The Name of God, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

وَاللّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَى دَارِ السَّلاَمِ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاء إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

010.025 But Allah does call to the Home of Peace: He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight

  1. Why is Islam associated with violence?

  • Current events filled with violence attributed to Islamic causes
  • History of the world remembers the threat of the "enemy" with Crusades, Ottomans, conquest of Spain
    • [Bias] Islam must have spread with a sword and not with knowledge
  1. Islamic jurisprudence about violence

    1. Definition of violence:
      1. Physical force exerted for the purpose of violating, damaging, or abusing: crimes of violence.
      1. The act or an instance of violent action or behavior.
      1. Intensity or severity, as in natural phenomena; untamed force: the violence of a tornado.
      1. Abusive or unjust exercise of power.
      1. Abuse or injury to meaning, content, or intent: do violence to a text.
      1. Vehemence of feeling or expression; fervor.

b.      Islam takes the middle ground always - we do not shun force but we stay away from force that destabilizes

c.      The middle of two extremes is a fine line - the seeratul mustaqeem

      • Example is of medicinal force to cure illness even if medicine is alcohol based

d.      Strict rules exist when implementing force: no women and children

                                                        i.            No transgression

002.190 Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loves not transgressors.

017.033 Nor take life - which Allah has made sacred - except for just cause. And if anyone is slain wrongfully, we have given his heir authority (to demand qisas or to forgive): but let him not exceed bounds in the matter of taking life; for he is helped (by the Law).

                                                        i.            When to stop

008.039 And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah altogether and everywhere; but if they cease, verily Allah doth see all that they do.

                                                        i.            Pre-emptive strikes is a no-no

5:28. "If thou dost stretch thy hand against me, to slay me, it is not for me to stretch my hand against thee to slay thee: for I do fear Allah, the cherisher of the worlds.
